About Us

The Utility Wildfire Alliance is a collaboration of electric utilities and stakeholders dedicated to minimizing wildfire risks associated with electric utilities.

Our Mission

To minimize wildfire risks associated with electric utilities by fostering collaboration and defining industry-wide best practices, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of wildfire mitigation strategies on a broader scale.

Our Purpose

With no coordinated industry approach, efforts and regulations will be more costly and less efficient. Another catastrophic event – that could be prevented – would have negative consequences for all. We aim to change this.

Why the alliance?

Catastrophic wildfires are becoming more prevalent and more costly. What recent wildfires have shown is that the impact on an electric utility is significant and far reaching across liability risk, financial stability, and insurance availability.
Many electric utilities – and regulators – don’t understand their wildfire risk, and don’t know where to start. Often they aren’t aware of the successful efforts underway by leading electric utilities throughout the country.
Electric utilities are facing significant challenges renewing their excess liability insurance coverage, as re-insurers don’t have consistent or proven methods of evaluating the risk. There is a need to advance best practices so risk can be better addressed, taking into account mitigation and operational response maturity.
The time is now to advance the industry’s robust response to wildfire and create a platform for sharing best practices to assist electric utilities seeking to address their wildfire risks.

Our Objectives

  • Educate the electric utility industry and its key stakeholders with best practices in wildfire risk and mitigation efforts from leaders, like yourself.
  • Provide the forum to counter inaction within the industry by advancing solid guidance to address this existential risk to the industry.
  • Establishing and illuminate industry-wide best practices that can be leveraged by various agencies, and by which the effectiveness of wildfire mitigation efforts on risk can be measured.

“We are seeing an urgent need by utilities across the country to quantify their wildfire risk to insurance companies and credit ratings agencies.
